About Us

Through free, one-on-one music lessons, Musical Empowerment at Duke University nurtures meaningful relationships between Duke student mentors and Durham schoolchildren based on a shared love of music and learning. The program aims to build a foundation of confidence, creativity and self-discipline to create successful individuals. Keeping this purpose in mind, Musical Empowerment at Duke: • Nurtures creativity, discipline, and confidence in both children and Duke students, giving all individuals the tools they need to excel in their future endeavors; • Inspires children from the community to learn how to play an instrument and to develop a love and passion for music; • Demonstrates the value and reward of hard work to both the child and the Duke student through learning to play an instrument; • Catalyzes compassionate mentoring partnerships between undergraduates and youth in the community; • Invigorates music education in areas underfunded or lacking in music programs by harnessing University resources.
