Past Events
Join Environmental Alliance and Duke Fashion Exchange in this two-part event exploring the intersection between fashion and environmental issues. As part of Earthfest Day 3: Individual Environmentalism, we will touch on how you can be conscious of sustainability in your relationship with clothing while also learning about how we can engage with issues in the larger fashion industry and environmental movement.
For Day 2 of EarthFest, we will be joined by Kristy Drutman, an environmental activist, advocate, blogger, and host of the Brown Girl Green podcast. Kristy works through digital media, workshops, and speaking engagements to spotlight environmental justice issues and spur discussions about inclusion in the environmental movement. She is self-described to be "working to change the image of what it means to be an environmentalist in the 21st century."
Join us to learn more about her work and have a chance to ask questions!
1:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Do you have any thoughts on what it means to be an environmentalist? Do you have any stories from your life related to the environment? Or do you just want to have your voice featured on a Duke podcast? Operation Climate, a Duke student-run podcast covering topics related to climate change and all its intersections, is doing a podcast recording on Friday April 9th from 1-4 pm on Abele Quad. Stop by our booth to share your stories in a casual environment and to have your voice featured on our podcast!
In the opening event for Earthfest 2021, Environmental Alliance will moderate a panel discussion and Q&A with three members of the Duke community who work on environmental issues in diverse disciplines. This event will explore questions related to the role of interdisciplinary fields in the environmental movement: What is the place academic research in social movements? What is the power of storytelling as a mechanism of change? What are the obligations and challenges around science communication today?
Our featured speakers are Imari Walker Karega, a PhD Candidate in the Pratt School of Engineering, Dr. Christopher Timmins from the Duke Department of Economics, and Dr. Miguel Rojas-Sotelo, director of the upcoming Water Towns film festival and Program Coordinator for Duke's Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies.
