Been Here, Still Here: Muslims and Islamophobia in the US

This interactive training invites Duke departmental staff to explore the history, impact, and current realities of Islamophobia in the United States. Participants engage with stories, data, and campus context to gain a deeper understanding of Muslim presence in America and how narratives of exclusion continue to shape perception and experience. While focused on Muslim students, the training supports broader learning for university staff by challenging assumptions, expanding cultural fluency, and strengthening inclusive practices across campus. Whether in student-facing roles or administrative work, staff leave better equipped to foster a university environment grounded in understanding, equity, and care.
Objectives

1. Provide a historical overview of Muslim presence in the U.S. and how narratives of exclusion have developed over time
2. Identify how Islamophobia shows up in campus environments, policies, and interpersonal interactions
3. Equip staff with awareness, language, and strategies to support Muslim students and contribute to a more informed and equity-minded campus culture
