📣 Announcements

1. Register for SSMU's Data Mini #3! 🏆
Registration can be found here: https://forms.gle/RDPP277oCMoUD69m7

The competition will take place on April 4th from 11am - 5:30pm in Wilkinson 126. Teams will receive and be introduced to the dataset upon competition start. Your team will have 5 hours to collect findings on the data and prepare a presentation. Your team is required to attend the beginning of the competition at 11am and the last hour of the competition (4:30 - 5:30pm), where you will present your findings. Snacks will be provided, and the room is open for your team to collaborate in. Competitors are permitted to leave during the analysis period to buy food or work in a different space as long as they are present for presentations. Please email chelsea.nguyen@duke.edu if you have any questions, and we look forward to seeing you there!

4. East Campus Bookbagging Event 🎒
Couldn't make it to our GBM? Live on East? Come out to our second bookbagging event next Wednesday and chat with upperclass students about the major/concentrations/minor, StatSci pathways, careers, professors, courses, and all things Duke Stats to get your questions answered. (RSVP)

🌱 Competitions & Opportunities

1. The Organization of Latino Actuaries (OLA) awards academic scholarships to students attending a US university next year who are interested in the actuarial profession. Applications are open from January 1 to March 31 each year. Finalists for the general scholarship are expected to be selected by July.The top student will receive the “OLA Cresta Scholarship”, which is a $7,500 award. Finalists for the general scholarship are not required to interview.
Applications are due March 31st! Questions can be sent to scholarships@latinoactuaries.org 

2. Applications for new Data Managers at Duke’s Emergency Department Help Desk are now live! The Help Desk is a volunteer group that helps address patients’ unmet social needs through screenings at the Emergency Department, Duke Endocrinology, and the Lincoln Community Health Center.
This is a great opportunity to gain real-world experience with large datasets of patient screening records and how to analyze trends from this data. If you are interested or have any questions, please reach out to pascal.bell@duke.edu (a StatSci minor!).

3. Upcoming Graduate Scholarship Information Sessions:
Scholarships for Graduate School in the US and Abroad - Monday, March 23rd, 5:00pm, Social Sciences 139

  • Duke’s scholarship advisors will be offering an introduction to graduate school scholarships, covering some of the most popular opportunities for Duke juniors, seniors, and recent graduates.
Fulbright Awards for Research, Master’s Study, or Teaching Abroad - Tuesday, March 24th, 5:00pm, Social Sciences 139
  • A Duke-dedicated Fulbright advisor will be introducing interested students to the program, including its many offerings all around the world! Previous winners have conducted field research in Southeast Asia, taught English in South America, and done graduate degrees in Europe, among many other outcomes.
Knight-Hennessy Scholars, Full Scholarships to Stanford, Friday, April 10, 12:00pm, Wellness Center 148/149
  • Come hear from the KHS Assoc. Director of Admissions! KHS scholars receive full funding for tuition, healthcare, living expenses, food, travel, books, professional development, and more toward graduate school in any program at Stanford.
