A Legacy That Transformed the Muslim American Community
“Our hope and our dedication are to the total struggle of the human family.”
– Imam W. Deen Mohammed
As Salaam Alaikum CML Family,
What an incredible and historic weekend! We are filled with gratitude to every single person who joined the 50th Golden Anniversary of Imam W. Deen Mohammed's transformative leadership.
The weekend commenced with a powerful opening reception that set the tone for the days to come. Many thanks to Duke President Vincent Price for attending. We were deeply honored to receive a special proclamation, from Governor Josh Stein's office officially acknowledging this milestone. The honor was compounded when the Mayor of Durham, Leonardo Williams, personally attended to present the proclamation, underscoring the profound and lasting impact of Imam Mohammed's work within our city and beyond.
The photos featured in this newsletter capture the warmth and significance of that opening ceremony.
A special note of thanks is due to the dedicated Planning Committee. Their countless hours of meticulous work, passion, and commitment were the engine behind this successful weekend. We are profoundly grateful for their service.
“Our students are the builders of tomorrow. If we lift their minds and faith today, they will lift the world tomorrow.”
Part 2 is a 90-minute workshop led by the Duke Career Center
This workshop helps undergraduate, graduate, and professional students explore their core values and identify what truly matters to them in their studies and future careers. Through guided reflection and probing questions, students are supported in navigating these important decisions with confidence and clarity.
The call for funding proposals for the Heaton-Blackshear Innovation Grant is now open!
H-B Grant awards are considered on the merits of student-centered initiatives addressing the well-being and social enhancement of the first and/or second year student experience.
Proposals identifying innovations in the following areas are encouraged:
• Curricular and co-curricular programming
• Intentional engagement of neurodiverse students
• Activities and programs in low stimulus environments
• Holistic well-being, opportunities for engagement, and/or increasing access to authentic belonging on campus and in residential settings.
As a reminder, these should be scalable pilot programs and should not include any requests for personnel or other budgetary items. Position requests and support for existing programs and events are all ineligible for consideration.
We are excited to announce the Armstrong Ambassadors program for 2025-2026! This is an opportunity designed to foster multicultural advancement, coalition building, and identity formation among our Duke students.
The Armstrong Ambassadors program exists to provide individualized support and guidance for students to explore their social activism experience. The CMA is interested in undergraduate students who are committed to exploring their passions and who are energized by the concept of community. We maintain the idea that leadership isn’t positional, it’s a process. What does this mean? This is an opportunity for ALL students. Whether you are in an organization, hold a title/position somewhere on campus, or you are just wanting to find new ways to get involved this experience can be for you!
The application deadline is Friday, December 31st. For more information: link
