1. SSMU Game Night 🎲
Come out for a fun-filled evening, featuring a variety of card decks, several friendly rounds of poker (no betting), and other statistics-themed games! We'll have delicious donuts to go with the games! (RSVP)

2. GBM #3 + Summer Experiences Panel ☀️
Join SSMU for our monthly GBM along with a summer experiences panel! Learn from upperclass students on how to apply for programs and make the most of your experience. Cookout milkshakes, burgers, sides, and more will be provided! (RSVP)

📣 Announcements

1. Statistics in Medicine Journal Club 📖
In case you missed it, we are starting a journal club! Interested in the intersection of statistics and medicine? Join our new biweekly journal club, where we’ll explore influential and exciting papers in the field. It’s a great way to build background knowledge for Honors Theses, biostatistics research, or future roles in healthcare and data science.

No prior experience is needed! Snacks will be provided, and later in the semester, you will have the chance to choose or present a paper as well. Fill out this quick, non-binding When2Meet to show your interest and availability!

🌱 Competitions & Opportunities

1. Apply to be a Spring 2026 TA for the Department of Statistical Science! The application will remain open throughout this semester, but applying ASAP is encouraged. Take a look at the TA Background and Responsibilities and apply here! Contact dus@stat.duke.edu if you have any questions.

2. Interested in pursuing Actuarial Science? The Infinite Actuary has resources for every exam, including free courses for Probability and Financial Mathematics. The website offers strategies, lessons, practice problems, and opportunities for interaction with instructors.

3. The EY AI & Data Challenge is one of the largest data challenges in the world, offering university students the opportunity to refine their AI & data science skills while developing innovative solutions to address global sustainability issues. Plans for the 2026 competition center on advancing our understanding of the climatic and environmental drivers of water quality. Register for the virtual information session, scheduled for Thursday, November 13, at 2:00 p.m.

4. Register for the COMAP Refresh for Relevance Challenge, focused on updating and adapting mathematical modeling for modern learning environments and research. Resources can consist of modules from the COMAP library or any other familiar material, and submissions will be complete, ready-to-use lesson plans. Incentives include a free COMAP membership, gift card drawings, publications, and grant considerations for revision or attendance at a math education conference. Top contributors may be invited to work on additional projects through the Solomon Garfunkel Legacy Fund.
