1. Stats Chats 🥐 (TODAY)
Come join us for a relaxed afternoon chat with Statistics professors! Ask questions, get advice, or just talk about anything stats (or not!). We’ll have bagels, tea, and good company—all you need to bring is yourself! (RSVP)

2. Sign up for Group FLUNCH with Dr. Jerry Reiter 🍎
FLUNCHes are a great way for faculty and students to connect over lunch, fostering mentorship and informal conversation outside the classroom. Our next group FLUNCH is with Dr. Reiter in December, and you can sign up here!

1. Several Committees are looking for more members!
Committees are a fantastic way to shape initiatives, build leadership skills, and collaborate with peers. Three of our committees are looking for more members!

2. Calling all upperclassmen! 💬
Please add your contact info here, along with interests and activities, so underclassmen can reach out! We hope this will help SSMU members connect, get advice, or find shared interests.

🌱 Competitions & Opportunities

1. Interested in learning about competitions with low stakes? DrivenData’s website offers data science practice competitions related to social justice. They are open for months at a time and provide experience in skills such as data mining, prediction, modelling, image classification, and document summarization on real-world datasets. The website also offers prize competitions, so check back later for more!

2. Submissions are now open for the 2026 Biopharmaceutical Student Paper Awards! The awards will be presented during the Biopharmaceutical Section open business meeting at the 2026 Joint Statistical Meetings, and winners will receive cash prizes. Winners will present their papers during one of the contributed paper sessions at JSM and are encouraged to attend the section’s business meeting to receive their awards in person. The submission deadline is December 1.

3. Apply for the AAAS Mass Media Fellowship! This 10-week summer program places science, engineering, and mathematics students at media organizations nationwide. Fellows will collaborate with media professionals at radio and television stations, as well as newspapers and magazines. As part of their job, the scientists and their journalist-hosts strive to make science news easy for the public to understand. Fellows are provided a stipend of $10,000 for the summer as well as travel expenses to and from AAAS and their sites. Applications will be accepted on the AAAS website until approximately January 1.
